 â“  FAQ

Tell me if this sounds familiar:

You know what you want to say — but you switch words to avoid awkward sounds. You trail off. You worry your voice doesn’t match your ideas.

Whatever your mother tongue or regional accent is, you might find yourself being misunderstood, sounding unclear, or struggling to speak naturally — especially under pressure.

You’ve got the ideas, but your delivery holds you back.

And it might be stopping you speaking up in some situations entirely.

If you’re a non-native English speaker…

You’re fluent, but still get asked to repeat yourself. You’ve searched for British English pronunciation videos, but get confused or overwhelmed.

You might:

  • Be constantly asked â€œWhere are you from?” or "What did you say?"
  • Avoid sharing your ideas in meetings, for fear of being misunderstood
  • Worry that your accent makes you sound less confident or credible
  • Get frustrated knowing what to say, but not how to say it naturally

You want to reduce your accent without losing your identity — and speak in a way that sounds confident, clear, and natural.

Maybe you're actively searching for a British accent coach who can give you specific feedback and guidance.

If English is your first language, but …

...something is getting in the way of your message: maybe you feel conscious of your regional accent or other speech habits.

You feel you mumble, speak too fast, or sound casual when it matters most.

You want to improve how you sound — maybe for work, interviews or public speaking — but still sound like you.

Change is possible. You just need a better approach.

My coaching helps people speak clearly, sound more natural, and be easily understood — whether you’re aiming for polished Standard British English, or just more confidence in your own voice.

“the second question isn't 'where are you from?' anymore...”

The one thing I appreciate most is that I really hadn't hoped that dropping the accent (or at least sounding more fluent) was in my reach at all. The most noticeable side-effect after taking the course has been that the second question when talking to a new person isn't "where are you from?" anymore, which, trust me, can get quite repetitive.

Paul had everything ready for fast and efficient lessons and it was as effective as it was fun.

Hi,

I'm Paul Baston.

Since 2014 I've coached hundreds of people from 40+ countries get clearer and more confident in their speech.

I've reached tens of thousands more with English Pronunciation Roadmap, the learning platform & YouTube channel I Co-Founded with my colleague & mentor, Ashley Howard.

I've worked 1-on-1 with senior professionals in tech, finance, medicine & law: people who can’t afford to have communication hold them back.

I started out teaching English as a foreign language in Vietnam, then earned a First Class BA (Hons) in Drama in 2010. My broad experience in TEFL, voice work, theatre & music means my method is holistic, engaging and effective.

Paul – British accent and pronunciation coach

Paul has worked with senior professionals & C-Suite executives from companies such as...

“Rediscover yourself as a speaker and a storyteller”

Working with Paul is so much more than just improving your spoken English ... which was my initial goal.

It’s about learning to use your voice as an instrument — becoming more expressive, confident, and reconnecting with yourself as a speaker. Paul has a unique method of bringing out the very best in you, highlighting the many facets of your potential and encouraging you to explore them fully.

... he transforms the way you engage with sounds, syllables, and words, helping you rediscover yourself as a speaker and a storyteller.

My 3-Stage Process:

Before we get started, I take you through a full speech assessment – it's an informal but thorough process that lets us identify the areas which are most holding back your clarity and confidence. After this, we get started with the coaching.

Although everyone is different, I take every client through a tried-and-tested process that follows 3 stages detailed below.

accent reduction classes

1. Get

Awareness

Sound awareness trains your ear to recognise sounds that you previously failed to distinguish.

Physical awareness gives you finer mastery over your speech instrument, especially lips, tongue and vocal folds.

Pattern awareness lets you work on multiple words at once, supercharging your progress.

Work on awareness first, and you'll make changes you never thought possible: ones that you failed to make before.

2. Learn

Skills

I give patient, continued feedback so you can keep on track.

You'll get tailored exercises and approaches that make you more skilled at speaking.

Gradually you'll be skilled enough to understand, hear and perform the new sound or pattern without my help.

3. Build

 New Habits

Now it's simply a case of repeating plenty of examples, and doing so in different contexts. This will feel conscious at the start, but then you start creating new unconscious habits.

And because you've laid the foundations properly by gaining awareness & skills, those repetitions will be 'good' repetitions: in other words, you know they are correct repetitions for the accent you want to adopt.

However, step by step, Paul helped me build not only my confidence in speaking English but also significantly improved my pronunciation — a task I thought was nearly impossible, especially at my age.

Paul is a trustworthy tutor because he is not only passionate about teaching but also open-minded and adaptable in his approach. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to improve their English skills!

What’s Your ‘One Key Detail’?

Let's identify the single most impactful change you can make to enhance your speech. In our free 30-minute session, we’ll pinpoint your ‘One Key Detail’ — the crucial adjustment that will elevate your communication skills.

Most people who join my free 30-minute session have a gut feeling something about their spoken English is “just a bit off” — but they don’t know exactly what. Although the picture can be complex, most people have one habit that shapes the way they’re heard more than any other.

Maybe you’re using the right words but still not being understood.

Maybe you speak fluently, but people keep asking “Where are you from?” — even in professional settings.

Or maybe you’re just tired of feeling like second-guessing yourself every time you speak.

In our session, I’ll help you identify your “One Key Detail” — the single most important insight about your speech patterns that, once addressed, will unlock clearer, more confident communication.

Your voice is made of patterns. We’ll find the one that matters most. We’ll find the one habit that’s quietly shaping everything you say.

This isn’t a generic tip. It’s not a sales pitch. It’s real, targeted feedback based on years of coaching experience. And it could be the beginning of a much easier way to speak.

Most speech habits are invisible — until someone shows you.

I have always loved the sound of English and dedicated a lot of time to improve my accent. My aim is to render my accent indistinguishable from that of a native speaker of English.

Paul has helped me tremendously, guiding me gently and picking up even the the most subtle mistakes in my pronunciation.

The course structure and materials provided (book and hours of high-quality audio) are excellent and Paul knew well how to tailor the lessons to my specific needs and wishes.

I always felt very well looked after and highly entertained. It was hard work and great fun at the same time, thanks!

Paul is a great coach. He's been very professional and supportive.

During my study he has carefully assessed my level of knowledge and developed the course structure based on the gaps that I had. He has showed great enthusiasm to help (me) and was ready to explain every little detail of the course.

Now I have a much better understanding of the English language and I'm interested to book another 10 lessons with Paul for advanced training.

Anton Tischen  â—  Russian speaker

I was coached by Paul for a couple of months. My goal was to reduce my French accent, having lived in the UK for a few years already.

I found Paul to be an excellent teacher. He listened carefully, highlighting accent problems I did not realise I had, and offering specific exercises to tackle them.

The program was nicely structured, too. And Paul was a pleasure to work with. I will probably go for a refresher course down the line.

Eric  â—  French speaker

Paul is an excellent trainer who helped me to get rid of my American English pronunciation, which I had acquired over many years by working for a US enterprise.

The nuances of British English are very subtle - Paul was very efficient telling me, what to change.

The method he uses is very advanced and a lot of material is provided to practice pronunciation.

“...sounds that once felt completely unrecognisable to me”

I am delighted to highly recommend Paul to anyone looking to elevate their English pronunciation skills. When I first met Paul, I wasn’t sure what to expect, as I had never worked one-on-one to improve my pronunciation before. However, our very first session proved to be invaluable. It quickly became clear that this course was about much more than simply repeating words like a parrot.

With his extensive experience and innovative techniques, Paul is more than just a great teacher—he’s like a voice therapist. I truly appreciate how he tailors the curriculum to my specific needs and considers the influence of my native language habits. Particularly remarkable are his clear and practical explanations of how to pronounce certain sounds that once felt completely unrecognisable to me.

Overall, working with Paul has been an exceptional experience, both in terms of his teaching and his warm, approachable personality.

What’s the difference between accent reduction, accent softening, accent removal, and accent modification?

In practice, these all refer to the same thing: making your English clearer, more confident, and more aligned with a target accent — usually Standard Southern British English (SSBE) in my coaching.

Here’s the key idea: you can’t ‘remove’ an accent without ‘adding’ a new one. Everyone has an accent — and how we judge them is often subjective and tied to culture or class. So the real question is: what kind of accent do you want to acquire?

You could even call this accent addition. Some prefer “accent reduction” because they want to reduce features of their first language accent. Others choose “softening” to keep their identity but sound more neutral. “Accent removal” tends to reflect a stronger desire for change. “Accent modification” is a broader, more technical term often used in elocution or professional speech training.

Whichever term you use, I offer expert British English pronunciation coaching that helps you adjust sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation to speak clearly, naturally, and with more control.

Do I need a full Standard British accent to be understood clearly?

Not at all. You can be clearly understood in any accent, it just depends on a couple of things:

- if you are a skilled speaker, either naturally or through training (pacing, precision, emphasis)

- familiarity (e.g. a clear Glaswegian accent might be perfectly understandable to many Brits, but other people who are less familiar with that accent might struggle to understand)

Accent coaching isn’t about erasing your identity: it’s about improving your clarity, confidence, and fluency. If you want to change your accent too, that's a personal choice and I can help with that.

What is SSBE? What’s the difference between RP, Modern RP, and BBC English?

SSBE (Standard Southern British English) is the clearest and most up-to-date label for the accent I speak — you can hear it in the video above. It’s also sometimes called Modern RP or Contemporary RP, and these terms are often used interchangeably.

When people say “RP” (Received Pronunciation), they might also mean Traditional RP — a more old-fashioned accent associated with the British upper class. “BBC English” once meant this, but these days, the BBC rightly showcases a wider range of regional British accents.

I can teach any accent, but my coaching materials — and my own speech model — are based on SSBE.

Can native English speakers benefit from elocution or pronunciation coaching?

Absolutely. Many of my clients are native speakers from regional UK backgrounds who want to speak more clearly, sound more neutral or polished, or feel more confident. Accent refinement for native English speakers can help with mumbling, articulation, or nerves — particularly in professional settings.

I want to sound like a British newsreader. Can you help?

Many newsreaders speak with a neutral Standard Southern British English accent. If that's what you mean, I can certainly help.

However, the “newsreader voice” also includes very specific intonation patterns and a formal delivery style designed for broadcast. Used outside the newsroom, this can sound a bit stiff or artificial.

If you’re aiming for a British English accent that’s crisp and confident but still sounds natural, I’ll help you find that balance — and we can absolutely borrow elements of the newsreader style to get there.

I’m not sure SSBE is the accent I want. Can you still help?

Definitely. While SSBE is my own accent and the one used in my resources, my British English accent coaching is fully customisable. I can teach you any accent — including regional British accents or even the speech patterns of a particular speaker you admire.

I’ll model your chosen accent, break it down step by step, and give you tools to practise it in context — plus I’ll point you to high-quality examples online so you can build a bank of reference material.

Will people stop asking me “Where are you from?”

Many clients come to me because they hear this question far too often — and while it’s often well-meaning curiosity, it can get exhausting when it’s the first thing people ask.

The good news? Most clients report that the question comes up far less after doing pronunciation or accent reduction coaching.

Can this coaching help with my monotone or flat delivery?

Yes — this is something I work on a lot. Beyond technical pronunciation, I also help you develop a more expressive, engaging speaking style. This includes vocal exercises and rhythm work to help you sound natural and dynamic without feeling fake or performative.

Is this like elocution training?

Yes and no. Traditional elocution often focused on overly formal “Queen’s English.” My coaching is more modern and flexible. If you want clear British English pronunciation, natural rhythm and intonation, and professional polish — without sounding posh or stiff — you’re in the right place.

How many sessions does it take to change my speech?

It varies. Most people gain new awareness and useful tools after just one session. More noticeable change — in terms of clarity, fluency, or accent modification — tends to begin around session 5, and strengthens with practice.

In the 12-Session Course, we cover all your top priorities from the initial assessment. In the 6-Session Course, I’ll prioritise the highest-impact areas for change.

You can always extend your coaching later to build, refine, or go deeper.

Do you provide practice materials?

Yes — as much or as little as you want. Some clients love homework, others hate it. I’ll provide pronunciation practice materials that match your goals and learning style.

You’ll also get access to a comprehensive digital resource:

British English Pronunciation Roadmap – a 319-page eBook with 12 hours of audio, authored by my colleague and mentor Ashley Howard. It covers everything from individual sounds to intonation and connected speech.

This resource is included when you book a 5- or 10-session block. During your Initial Session, I may also send excerpts from it to get you started.

How long are the sessions? Where are they held?

The Initial Session is 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions are 45 minutes. All sessions — including accent reduction, elocution training, and British English pronunciation classes — are delivered online.

In-person sessions

These are rare but possible. If face-to-face is your only option, I may be able to arrange it (I’m based in Greater Manchester). Just note that I charge extra for travel time and expenses.

Do you offer an online British English pronunciation course?

I don’t currently offer a self-paced course, but I do offer personalised British English pronunciation coaching online.

You’ll get a clear structure, practice materials, and targeted support. Many people find this far more effective than a generic pronunciation course because it’s built around your voice and goals.

Can you help with interviews or presentations?

Yes — many clients come to me for help with interviews, meetings, or public speaking. Whether you’re looking to reduce a foreign or regional accent, sound more polished, or speak British English more clearly, I’ll tailor your coaching to your specific context and objectives.
